Synvisc: Basic Facts

Interestingly Synvisc is considered as

a treatment rather a therapy or a drug. SYNVISC is a treatment called a viscosupplement that lubricates and cushions your knee joint and relieves pain. Synvisc acts like synovial fluid that occurs naturally in the joints. Synovial fluid acts as a lubricant and shock absorber. SYNVISC used in the cure of pain in osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee in patients. SYNVISC is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to hyaluronan products or patients with infections in or around the knee. It should be used only after non-drug treatment and simple medication (e.g., acetaminophen) have failed to provide relief.

Synvisc: Ingredients

Synvisc® (hylan G-F 20) is an elastoviscous fluid containing hylan polymers produced from chicken combs. Hylans are derivatives of hyaluronan (sodium hyaluronate), a natural complex sugar of the gly-cosaminoglycan family. Hyaluronan is a long-chain polymer containing repeating disaccharide units of Na-glucuronate-N-acetyl glucosamine.

Synvisc: Doses

Synvisc always takes under doctor’s guidance. The recommended doses of Synvisc will be different for different patients, according to the requirements of each patient. Synvisc is injected directly into the knee joint by a health professional under the supervision of your doctor. Avoid taking stress or jogging, tennis or lifting weights for 48 hours following an injection.

The dose depends on the location of the arthritis and can be repeated after 1 to 3 months for further relief. The usual dose for knee osteoarthritis is 1 injection per week into the knee joint for a total of 3 weeks. The maximum recommended dose is 6 injections within 6 months.

Synvisc: Side Effects

Synvisc may cause allergic reaction for those patients who are more susceptible to allergies in the components of Synvisc. These allergic reactions include hives, swelling of lips and mouth and throat constriction. Temporary pain at affected joint, rashes or burning sensations on the injected part, headache and stomach related disturbances are some other side effects of this drug.

In some cases Calf cramps, dizziness, facial flushing with swelling of the lips, headache, and infection of the joint, itching of the skin and muscle pain was also reported by the patients after using this drug in accordance with prescription. Some common side effects caused by Synvisc are knee pain or swelling after injection, allergic reaction, difficult breathing, fever, fast heartbeat, muscle pain, itching at the injection area.

Synvisc: Not for Eeveryone

Synvisc must not be consumed by the patients or individuals who:
• is allergic to any of the ingredients of the medication
• has an infected or severely swollen joint
• has fluid that doesn’t have the proper flow in the veins or lymphatic system of the leg to be injected
• has a skin disease or infection at or around the area where injection has to be given
