Which Sexual Lubricant Should I Use?

Sex can be enhanced with plenty of lubricant of the right type whether

you are young and have plenty of natural lubrication as soon as you are turned on, or older and find that you lubricate less than you used to.

What type of sex lubricants are there. Well, the majority are water based but there are also some with silicone oils and other using natural or mineral oils.

Lets look at water based lubricants first.

These are excellent for all situations except when you want sex in the wet or for all over body use such as massage. If you use them for massage you will find that they feel too cold and they dry up quickly. Used in the wet they quickly disperse and the lubrication effect is lost. Some water based lubricants come as a gel and others as a fluid. The gel ones are easier to apply but can be difficult to get out of the bottle (just like sauces!).

But used for penetrative sex, either with a penis or a sex toy they are good. There are also types that are safe to ingest so can be used when you want to mix penetrative and oral sex. These oral ones often have added flavours such as ‘apple’ or ‘tropical fruits’. Whereas some lubricants are incompatible with some materials used in sex toys, water based lubricants can be used with any sex toy.

You might wonder why use any other type of lubricant?

Silicone lubricants are very popular. They offer a very silky feel, go a long way and don’t dry up quickly. In fact they don’t dry up at all but are slowly absorbed into the skin. Because of this some people are a little wary of using silicone oils on health grounds. However there seems little danger — silicone oils are a common ingredient in body lotions and hair conditioners. Perhaps it’s worth avoiding frequent use with oral sex just in case.

The other big advantage of silicone oil based sex lubes is that they don’t dissolve in water so are ideal for sex in the wet, whether a pool, bath or just a shower. Natural lubrication is also easily washed away in water so a silicone lube is ideal for anyone having sex in the wet.

Silicone based lubes tend to be more expensive for the same amount as water based lubes, however they are not really more expensive as they go a lot further so you need less on each occasion. One further thing to note is that silicone based lubricants should not be used on silicone sex toys as the silicone rubber as it tens to soften and damage the surface of the rubber. Silicone is fine on other materials such as latex, hard plastics, glass etc.

Lastly there are natural and mineral oil based lubricants such as most massage oils, many creams, baby lotion, petroleum jelly (eg vasaline) etc. These oils are best kept away from latex such as normal condoms, rubber sheets, rubber fetish wear, latex sex toys. They are generally harmless with oral sex. Oily lubricants are fine on silicone rubber and and glass sex toys. Some other sex toy materials are OK but take care to check.

Massage oils are ideal for massage (would you believe!). This is because they give the right sort of slide to the skin and leave the skin feeling good after a wash. The oil is best warmed slightly before use: during use the gentle friction of skin on skin keeps the warmth.

As well as a wonderful hand massage how about trying a body to body massage. If you use a polythene or polyurethane sheet under you, there is nothing sexier that two well oiled bodies rubbing over each other!

Enjoy the best sex of your life with extra help of the right sexual lubricant!
